Just One Thing with Sasha Brown
Sasha Brown’s flash “Catching Babies” is a delightfully terrifying romp full to the brim with spontaneously generated new humans. Here he shares just one thing about the piece:
“‘Catching Babies’ is supposed to be like a zombie story except instead of eating brains it's babies, right, so if you're exposed to someone with a baby then oh no, you have a baby now too. I tried to follow the same basic beats as a zombie story: chaotic opening, all-out war, moment of pastoral respite, grim ending. I don't actually hate having a baby! Turns out I fuckin love babies and besides my kid is like eight now and he never even liked Bluey. But, I mean, there's this moment when you're like 30 and everyone's like WHERE'S YOUR BABY, MAN, right? It's so weird. Leave me alone. Maybe I want to move to Paris instead. That was me and my wife's other plan. ‘We should either have a kid or move to Paris.’ Anyway what I learned is that having a baby filled the chasm left within me when my own father abandoned me as a baby, a fissure so deep I didn't previously know it was there, and also I get to play legos. So that worked out great! Maybe this story is for my father, instead of me. Wherever you are, Jim, whatever you're up to. Way to not catch that baby.”
