Announcing the Split Lip Summer Mixtape Contest Winners!

We are thrilled to share the results of our first-ever flash fiction contest, the Split Lip Summer Mixtape Contest. Judge Juan Martinez has made his selections and the winner is:

"Little Mouse" by Angela Carlson
Juan says: "Little Mouse" packs a big emotional punch: It's such a beautiful, compressed story of loss, and it's so full of precise and loving observation. I was in awe of the power in the piece, and of the absolute control of the writer over the material, from its bold initial assertion to its sad, wise, resonant final lines. Lovely, sad, and compelling.

Two runners-up were also named:

"In the Other Room" by Yael van der Wouden
Juan says: "In the Other Room" is my favorite kind of ghost story, where everyone is a little sad and life goes on and it's all written with a sense of what little time we're all allotted. A terrific story, and Frankie is a hell of a companionable ghost.

"Something Else" by Ashley Hutson
Juan says: "Something Else" is something else altogether: the voice is strong and assured, and the sense of mourning feels real and earned. Terrific work.

Once again, we are so grateful to everyone who entered and to our finalists. You all made this the best kind of hard decision.

Stay tuned for Angela's, Yael's, and Ashley's work in our inaugural print issue and online!
